The fruiting trees of Boulder are beginning to put on a beautiful show as the weather begins to warm. As many folks are thinking about planting this spring we have been asked what are the historic varieties that would do well in our area?

We are fortunate to have a census of the apples from 1922. The Ben Davis, which was the most widely planted variety, was known at the time as the “mortgage lifter” as it was a reliable crop that stored well and was a good, all-purpose apple. Do you have a favorite historic variety?
