The Orchard is in!

Undergraduate student researchers examine plants along a 100 ft transect in the newly planted apple orchard at the Lousberg Parcel on OSMP property.

We are so excited to announce that the Boulder Apple Tree Project has planted an apple orchard with trees grafted from historic cultivars from around Boulder County and includes a Colorado Orange! The trees are still young but are establishing very well. We are grateful to Boulder OSMP and specifically to their agricultural lease program for making the space available for these apple trees. We also want to be sure to the thank the Bridge House Ready to Work Program for providing help with the planting. This summer, a team of undergraduate students have been documenting the growth of the trees and taking a census of the vegetation that is growing throughout the site. Please be on the lookout for opportunities to volunteer in the orchard this fall as we prepare the trees for dormancy. It is our hope that the trees will begin to set fruit in the next 3-5 years.

Are you looking for more ways to become involved in the Boulder Community? Community Fruit Rescue is actively seeking HARVEST LEADERS to help with the fall apple harvest. Be sure to sign up for training this week!

Did you know that you can help us locate and map trees any time of the year? Using the student created BATP Collect App you can help to document apple trees throughout Colorado. We need your help in finding the oldest remaining apple trees from the previous century!

SAVE THE DATE!

Saturday, October 7, will be our Apple Blitz this year and will meet at the Orchard site. Friday, December 1, will be our Apple Symposium at the CU Museum of Natural History.
